ChatGPT Outage Leaves Millions Stranded
ChatGPT, the popular AI chatbot, experienced a significant outage on 1/23/2025, leaving millions of users unable to access the service.
The outage, which began around noon UK time (7 am ET), resulted in an error page for website visitors and disrupted access through official apps and other integrations. OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, acknowledged the issue, citing “elevated error rates” and stating they were investigating the problem.
Tracking website Down Detector witnessed a surge in user complaints during the outage. Social media platforms were flooded with frustrated users expressing their dependence on ChatGPT for work and studies. Many reported being in the middle of coding projects, writing essays, or other tasks that relied heavily on the AI chatbot.
With over 300 million weekly users and over a billion messages sent daily, ChatGPT has become an integral part of many workflows. Its rapid growth since its 2022 launch has solidified its position as one of the fastest-growing consumer applications in history.
OpenAI has continuously expanded ChatGPT’s capabilities through new features and systems, including a paid subscription tier for enhanced features. The chatbot’s API has also been widely adopted, with over 1.3 million developers integrating ChatGPT into their applications. This widespread integration meant that the outage also disrupted these third-party services.
While the outage was eventually resolved, it highlighted the growing reliance on AI tools like ChatGPT and the potential disruptions that can occur when such services become unavailable.
