Google Play Store May Delete Thousands of Apps Next Month: Here’s Why

As of next month, Google will implement a new Spam and Minimum Functionality policy, which demands that apps on the Play Store meet higher standards of functionality. The policy targets apps that:

2. Fail to Operate: Apps that do not install, load, or function correctly.
3. Cause Issues: Apps that frequently freeze or crash.
4. Have Limited Utility: Apps that offer minimal functionality, such as displaying a single image or wallpaper.

“We’re updating the Spam and Minimum Functionality policy to ensure apps meet uplifted standards for the Play catalog and engage users through quality functionality and content user experiences,” stated Google in their announcement.

Previous Policy vs. New Policy

Google’s former guidelines for app functionality were relatively lenient, requiring apps to provide a “stable, engaging, responsive user experience.” However, with the new policy, the bar has been raised significantly.
